Does The Legal System Function as an Attachment-Like Figure? The Calming, Empowering, and Pro-Societal Effects of a Responsive Legal System

The main goal of the current research is to examine the relevance of attachment theory for studying the relationship people form with legal institutions. Following an expansion of attachment theory to organizational settings, we hypothesize that, like in close relationships, people search for the proximity of the legal system in times of need and feel calmed and empowered by a supportive system. We also hypothesize that people develop specific attachment orientations to the legal system, and that these orientations underlie their legal attitudes and use of legal institutions as a source of security and well-being. These hypotheses are examined in a series of correlational and experimental studies. We are constructing a new scale tapping attachment orientations towards legal institutions and examining its reliability and validity. Then, we conduct a series of experiments aimed at examining the attachment-related functions of legal institutions – proximity-seeking in times of need and the safe-haven and secure-base functions of a responsive legal system.
