Avi is a postdoctoral researcher at the Israel Center for Addiction and Mental Health (ICAMH) at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He acquired a BSc in psychology and biology, an MA in cognitive psychology and a PhD in Psychology, all at Ben Gurion University. His doctoral research under the supervision of Dr. Talya Sadeh and Prof. Michael Gilead studied how people recollect, justify and share their memories with others, by applying Natural Language Processing (NLProc) techniques to memory narratives. At the core of his research lies the tension between the uniquely human adaptation of learning from others’ experiences, coupled with the need for epistemic vigilance to avoid being duped by misinformation. He also led research projects on machine learning in the use of mental health, screening for suicide risks and analyzing real-world data of users on digital mental health platforms. His research at ICAMH applies a theory-driven approach in employing NLProc methods for psychological research, particularly focusing on a better understanding of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and its diverse symptomology through linguistic analysis.
